Seasonal Advice Sheet

Summer is not over! Late summer was a season defined by the chinese as a period between Summer and Autumn. It is a time of fullness as the crops ripen for harvesting. There is a sense of pausing as we feel the changes in nature unfolding.

Element

The element associated with late summer is earth. This element represents nourishment; physical, emotional and spiritual. The earth element supports us, allowing us to feel grounded and steady, even when life around us appears far from stable and nurturing. Many of us prioritise caring for those around us - an admirable quality, provided that we nurture ourselves first. We cannot serve others when we are ourselves depleted. Often feelings of deep fatigue, resentment at not being supported by others, and irritability are a signal that our earth energy has become depleted.

Organ Associations

The organs associated with earth are the spleen and stomach. These are the primary digestive organs in traditional chinese medicine TCM. The spleen also controls the flesh and muscles as well as preventing bruising and bleeding. It also prevents prolapses. Digestive upsets are common in this season, as are conditions exacerbated by a damp climate. The peak activity of the digestive organs is 7-11am, hence the importance of a good breakfast. 12 hours later is the weak time for the stomach and spleen, so try eating your main meal a little earlier.

Emotional Associations

The emotion associated with the earth element is worry and sympathy. Worrying consumes a lot of unecessary energy, so practice thoughts that you know make you feel good. We always have a choice in what we focus on. The spleen not only digests food, but thoughts as well. It is extremely important to just eat - not read, listen to the radio etc. or eat on the run. Appreciate the food, and chew it well. It is after all your most powerful medicine.

Dietary Advice

The spleen's favourite food is easily-digestible, well-cooked meals such as root vegetables, congees and porridge. It dislikes too much raw food like salads and detests ice-cold drinks and ice-cream!

The lungs and the digestive system are vital in Qi or energy production. Acupuncture is a useful treatment for strengthening your earth element. Enjoy noticing the subtle changes in this late summer.

Don't forget that nature is our greatest teacher.
